Word meaning Originally referring to a document bearing a signature (日葡辞書1603),it was also used for a type of paper money in the province of Ise around the same time. From 1692 this is used to refer to a small paper slip issued after inspection for ordering the paying of taxes えど時代、検見直後に代官などによって発せられた仮の徴税令書。早急に徴税するために年貢の正式な目録が出される前に年貢割付を記して村方に出された書付。仮免状. Later any kind of little paper slip connected to paying of money, i.e. reminders of payment.転じて、督促状・催促状。Attested with the current meaning of “postcard” first in 1883. The post card was introduced two years after the inception of the national postal system, in 1873.
