The word has a convincing Old Indo-Aryan etymology (Turner 1962–6: #1373; Mānušs et al. 1997: 24; Vekerdi 2000: 23). In addition, there are no shared Romani loanwords from Arabic or Turkish (contamination by the Turkish form may only concern forms in some Balkan dialects of Romani).
